When do you recommend saline breast implants?

The vast majority of our patients choose silicone breast implants in Arizona, but some of our patients prefer to have saline breast implants. Saline breast implants have some advantages over silicone which primarily involve flexible fill. The ability to fill the breast implant to the specific requirements and establish symmetry is critically important for some patients. In other words, while silicone breast implants have been designed for a fixed volume 25 cc apart, saline breast implants can be filled by 1 cc increments until a more ideal symmetry is established. For better symmetry, saline might serve some patients better. I also highly recommend saline breast implants in cases where the patient desires an extremely perky feel and fake appearance.

Why are saline breast implants perkier than silicone?

Saline breast implants are designed slightly different than silicone breast implants. Depending on the manufacturer, most saline breast implants have a slightly thicker outer shell. This is a contributing factor in how firm they feel. Saline is medical grade salt water solution. One important characteristic of water is that it is not compressible and therefore will feel firmer under pressure.

Is the Mentor Implant Sizing system valuable in a saline breast implant consultation?

Mentor®’s Volume Sizing System (VSS) consists of 18 uniquely shaped volume sizers that have been shown to provide a realistic preview of breast size. There’s no way to predict the exact cup that a certain implant size can create for a patient, but this sizing system has been tested against other popular methods and found to provide the most accuracy.

Using this system, we are able to simulate 24 different sizing volumes, ranging from 150 to 775 cc. The soft volume sizers fit easily into a bra and while you are in the office, a realistic representation of your new cup can be simulated. With saline breast implants, you can add in 1 cc increments and have a lot more size options than what the VSS can show you. We recommend patients bring shirts or tops you normally wear and try the sizers several times before having breast augmentation surgery. Patients have a much easier time deciding on the most appropriate implant size with this system. In one study, 83% percent of breast surgeons indicated the volume sizing system had a high positive impact on their patients while reducing the need to operate again for size issues. It’s simply the most accurate way to size a breast cup.

Why do some doctors only offer Silicone Breast Implants and why do you offer both?

Saline and silicone breast implants are both FDA-approved and effectively and safely enlarge a woman’s breast. In our office, we believe in patient education, and we respect a patient’s right to choose freely from the different breast implant options available. Some plastic surgeons do not apply this same philosophy in their practice and limit their patient’s choices.

Dr. Aldo offers both saline and silicone breast implants.
