Do you recommend silicone breast implants?

For patients who wish to have the most natural feel and shape to their breasts, silicone breast implants are the best choice. Silicone breast implants feel softer than saline breast implants. The current generation of implants have a stronger outer shell and are filled with a specially designed gel material, called cohesive silicone gel.

Cohesive gel is an advanced technology that feels especially soft and maintains the shape of the breast. Is the Mentor® Implant Sizing system valuable in a breast augmentation consultation?

Mentor®’s Volume Sizing System (VSS) consists of 18 uniquely shaped volume sizers that have been shown to provide a realistic preview of breast size. There’s no way to predict the exact cup that a certain implant size can create for a patient, but this sizing system has been tested against other popular methods and found to provide the most accuracy. Using this system, we are able to simulate 24 different sizing volumes, ranging from 150 to 775 cc. The soft volume sizers fit easily into a bra and while you are in the office, a realistic representation of your new cup can be simulated. We recommend patients bring shirts or tops you normally wear so they can try the sizers several times before having surgery. Patients have a much easier time deciding on the most appropriate implant size with this system. In one study, 83% percent of breast surgeons indicated the volume sizing system had a high positive impact on their patients while reducing the need to operate again for size issues. It’s simply the most accurate way to size a breast cup.

What is the silicone breast implant warranty?

Currently, all breast implant manufacturers offer a limited warranty against implant leakage. This warranty includes a lifetime replacement for the same size breast implant that was implanted at your original surgery. Mentor® goes beyond that and offers additional coverage should there be leakage within the first 10 years. In addition to replacing the breast implant if rupture occurs before 10 years after implantation, the warranty includes financial assistance towards surgery and anesthesia costs. Mentor®’s warranty covers against trauma, which makes it the best warranty available.

Should I get the Keller Funnel™ with my Silicone Breast Implants?

There are many advantages to the Keller Funnel™ when silicone breast implants are placed. It allows for a smaller incision, a true, no touch delivery, and less trauma to the breast implants and breast during the surgery. Before the Keller Funnel™, the surgeon would have to use their fingers to push the breast implant into the pocket. Each finger would create a high pressure point and possibly weaken the implant shell. Over time, this could eventually lead to an implant leak. All of this can be easily avoided by using the Keller Funnel™.

Can you tell me about the cohesive nature of the latest silicone breast implant and why it’s important?

Current FDA-approved silicone breast implants have a special kind of silicone gel. This gel is semi-solid and not a liquid. It is very sticky, especially towards silicone particles. Because of its sticky nature, this gel is called cohesive silicone gel. Cohesive gels are an advanced technology that is considered safer when compared to the more liquid form of silicone used decades ago in older generations of breast implants. The sticky nature of this breast implant gel protects the patient from gel migration in case of a leak in the shell. Cohesive gel breast implants are sometimes referred to as “gummy bear” breast implants.
